The Benefits of Insulating Interior Walls

While most homeowners in central Texas probably don’t give much thought to whether the interior walls of their homes are insulated, there are some very good reasons to consider insulating the walls inside your home if they aren’t already.  You know the importance of quality insulation in the exterior walls, attic, and other areas of your home, but what are the benefits of insulating the walls that separate the living spaces of your home?  Our Austin spray foam insulation experts have the answers.

How about improved comfort?  Depending on whether it’s summer or winter, insulating the interior walls in your home can help maintain comfort for every member of the family.  Everyone has different comfort thresholds; during summer months you may prefer it a bit warmer or cooler in a room you’re occupying without it affecting the entire house, especially if you have a zoned system.  During winter, if a member of your household runs a space heater in a room, you don’t have to feel the heat radiating through the walls in other rooms.

Sound barriers are a wonderful thing these days.  Maybe you like to turn in early, while your kids like to stay up a bit later watching television, playing video games, or listening to music.  Insulation installed in interior walls is a great way to make it possible for everyone in your family to enjoy doing their own thing without other members of the family suffering.

Better energy efficiency.  Without insulation in interior walls, rooms that are cooler or hotter than others can impact other spaces in your home.  Heat transfers between your spaces, especially those without a barrier such as insulation.  If you have rooms in your home that go unused much of the time you can save on energy costs by not only closing those rooms off, but insulating walls.

There are many reasons to consider interior wall insulation in addition to those above.  Sound barrier, enhanced comfort for your family members, reduced energy costs and more.  While these are all good reasons to insulation the walls inside your home, one that may catch your attention is that it will increase the value of your home!

I appreciate that you mentioned that insulating your home’s interior walls your home be more energy efficient by preventing heat from easily transferring from room to room. My husband and I are having a house built right now, and we are trying to decide if we should get all the walls and different areas insulated now or wait and see how things are without it. I think that it would be smart to have it done now so that we can make sure our home will be more energy-efficient and we can keep our energy bills under control from the start. Thanks for pointing out the benefits of insulating your home.

      Michaela,

If the home is in the construction phase then the ideal time to insulate any of the walls would be now. Just a standard R11 or R13 unfaced fiberglass batt would be enough for not only a little more individual room temperature comfort, but it will also help out with sound control. Hope you have a great build!

It makes sense that having insulation in your walls can prevent a hot room from transferring heat to the rest of your house. My wife and I have noticed that our guest bedroom gets especially hot during the summer due to its thin windows, and we would like to prevent it from making our nearby living room hot and uncomfortable. We’ll consider getting wall insulation so our house is consistently cooled.

It’s good that you brought up how everyone in your household can stay at a temperature that they are most comfortable with. Ever since my son bought a window AC for his room, my wife and I have been getting especially cold at night since our room is directly next to his. We’ll consider getting some insulation installed so that we don’t get too cold at night.

I’m thankful that you brought up how insulation can help block out any noises that your children make so that you can go to sleep at any time. My son tends to invite his friends over to play video games on weekends, but I need to find a way to block out the sound of the television so that I can get the sleep I need for an upcoming business trip next month. Maybe getting some insulation would help me keep my bedroom quiet.
