It’s already spring, and summer will be here before we know it. Many Austin homeowners experience an increase in pests during warmer months from fleas, gnats, mosquitoes and ants to cockroaches and even termites or silverfish. How in the world could insulation deter pests? As Central Texas home insulation professionals we want to enlighten you regarding blown-in cellulose and how it can help keep those pesky bugs under control.
While cellulose insulation provides a high R-value which is highly important to homeowners concerned about energy efficiency (and who isn’t?), it’s also effective against pests as many types contain natural fibers infused with boric acid. Boric acid is an insecticide/pesticide that repels ants, fleas, flies, cockroaches and other insects however it’s also more flame retardant than other types of insulation. Another benefit is noise reduction, an important factor if your live in an area where traffic or noise is a problem.
Another way blown-in insulation helps protect your home from those unwanted insects is by completely blocking their passageways, as blown-in cellulose is installed in a way that it completely fills even the tiniest gaps or crevices around not only windows and doors, but framing, plumbing, pipes, wiring – literally every possible entry into your home. No one wants pests or critters in their home, and considering the “tightness” of blown-in cellulose you can also rest assured your conditioned (heated or cooled) air is staying inside, while hot, humid summer or cold winter air remains outside where it belongs. So many benefits!
At HabiShield we know that the type of insulation used in Austin homes depends on a number of factors, and that all are effective for their purpose when installed properly. Whether you are considering spray foam, blown-in cellulose or fiberglass or traditional batted and roll insulation, count on our team to provide the highest quality products along with expert installation. Your home is your biggest investment; never settle for less than the best.

One response to “How Cellulose Insulation Helps Control Those Pesky Pests in Austin Homes”
Thanks for mentioning how installing cellulose insulation ensures that the small openings in your homes are sealed off so that unwanted pests are unable to access your house. My wife and I have started to notice that cockroaches tend to hide behind some of the boxes in our attic during the winter, and we would like to find a way to prevent them from getting into our home since we plan on selling it next summer. We’ll see if we can insulate our house to keep insects out.
